We work closely alongside Salford EMTAS (Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Service) to support pupils who are at the early stages of learning English. Through this partnership, children may receive assessment, intervention and ongoing support tailored to their individual language needs.
In line with Salford EMTAS guidance, support may include:
• Assessment of new arrivals using the Bell Foundation Assessment Framework
• One-to-one or small group interventions within school
• Ongoing assessment and monitoring of pupils’ progress and attainment
• Specialist EAL support from trained staff to support children in accessing the curriculum
As children with EAL join our school at different ages and stages of language development, we tailor support to meet their individual needs and experiences. We recognise and understand that:
• Some children may experience a ‘silent period’, where they choose not to communicate verbally whilst becoming familiar with a new language and environment
• Many EAL children are bilingual or multilingual and may benefit from pre-teaching of vocabulary and concepts to support their understanding and participation within lessons
• Children learning English as an additional language often make accelerated progress following a period of adjustment to a new culture, environment and language
At Peel Hall, we value and celebrate the rich diversity, languages and cultures within our school community.
